Large-format DIY and building supplies merchant Placemakers initiated a store development programme from 2003 to 2005.
As retailer with a nationwide profile, the client tasked us to explore an optimal store design that would cater for the needs of its traditional trade-based customers as well as appeal to the fast-growing home DIY market.
The design concept focused on a balanced arrangement of traffic flow of trade and retail customers, as well as delivery and pick-up vehicular flow. The building form was an honest response to the store functionality and the discount brand image, expressing the large volume of the store.
The design concept was then applied to over a dozen Placemakers stores throughout New Zealand. WMZA designed, documented and observed the construction of stores in Auckland, Christchurch, Invercargill, Queenstown, Kerikeri, Whitianga and Hamilton.
