Further capacity was required at the Waitakere Hospital and a new 12 bed ward was required to be inserted into the existing hospital in an area previously used for administration.
Six two bedded rooms with associated ensuites, a sub ward station, clean utility room, dirty utility room and a variety of store rooms were incorporated into the functioning hospital over a period of 5 months.
The end result was a facility that not only complemented the other sections of the ward but provided its own identity. The interior finishes were chosen to provide a calm and warm interior. Natural daylight was used wherever possible to enhance the environment. Skylights where used in the ensuites which provided a warm, diffused light during daylight hours.
WDHB have been very complimentary of the finished result and the patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
