Equivalent to 4 rugby fields in size the complex $150m Fresh Distribution Centre developed for Woolworths NZ Ltd stands out. The temperature-controlled building has various chill zones set at 2, 7 and 13 degrees. Complementing this is a large ripening facility used specifically for avocados and bananas. The building is linked to the neighbouring Hilton Foods warehouse via a high-level automated conveyor bridge delivering meat product directly into the DC for distribution alongside the fruit and vegetables. The 24/7 facility handles 350,000 crates of fresh produce at any one time. The project has been built to Greenstar 4 and incorporates rainwater harvesting, an extensive solar panel array, low energy and water usage, condensers for cooling and offsets 183 tonnes of CO2 a year.
